In planning my trip home to Midland, MI, for the upcoming holiday season of 2022, I was able to set a plan in motion with a local yoga teacher, Keri Kenney, to curate a live meditation concert in her space, co-hosted by the Midland Creative 360 Center.
Come performance time, we were able to fill the small yoga studio with about 30 people who were eager to experience a deeply meditative and relaxing experience. After a small movement exercise led by Keri, I was able to set the space with my saxophone, flute, and synthesizers, creating dynamic realms of musical spaces that allowed participants to journey between and around their minds, the physical space, and the spaces in between.
In recording this live event, I wanted to make sure that I could preserve this experience for future ears. It took me the next year to meditate on what parts of the concert experience I wanted to preserve in an album, and What We Call Home is the culmination of many consultations and conversations with close friends and family on what the album would look like.
I hope this album can offer a place of solace and relief for those going home in this upcoming holiday season, be it to look forward to their trips, to remind them of home if they cannot return, or to give them a space to heal if they associate home with stressful situations.
Below are some links from the original event if you want to read more about what it was like at the time.
